How to Estimate Your Web Hosting Requirement
There are two very important factors to consider when thinking about a hosting plan to choose from, they are the Disk Space and bandwidth. Yes there are other factors to consider but if you get any of these two wrong then you are in for big problems.
Disk Space - The Disk Space is basically the amount of data that can be stored on the web server. So, the size of your website which comprises the HTML, CSS, images, Script, Video, Audio, Email and other stuff you put on your website will combine to determine the size of disk space you need. What takes up most of our disk space are things like videos, Audios, Images and Database while Text (HTML, CSS and others) takes up very little space.
Try and kept your pages as low as possible so that they load fast even with a slow internet service. Most dial-up connections are slow and under 56kbps, if your web page is above 60kb, it will take it like 8 seconds to load. That is slow in loading time for a web page, ordinarily to you, you might not consider 8 seconds to be slow but that is 8 seconds of staring at a blank space. If your average page size is 25kb and under, then you can put approximately 40 pages on a 1mb disk space. If you have 100mb of disk space, you can host 4000 pages.
Bandwidth - The bandwidth is the amount of data you can transfer to and from your web server per month, please note that it is calculated on monthly basis. It includes all uploads, downloads, HTTP and FTP. The Bandwidth also depends on the number of pages you have on your website as well as the number of visitors that visit your website and the number of pages they visit.
Let’s say your average page size of 25kb, you have 20,000 visitors per month and they visit an average of 5 pages each time they visit your website, then you will need about 2500MB, or 2.5GB, of bandwidth per month. Note that 20,000 visitors per month equal approximately 667 visitors per day which is large.
In conclusion, the hosting plan you decide to choose depends of what your website project demand is, what your website is meant to do. If you are going to have loads of heavy stuff on your site with loads of traffic intended, then you go for a higher plan, but if it’s just a basic site then you can choose the smaller plan. You can always upgrade or downgrade the web hosting plan you choose giving notice of such to your web hosting provider.
